Parenting Courses

If some of the situations below sound familiar to you, you may benefit from participating in the Emotion-Focused Skill Training for Parents.

- I try to be patient repeatedly, but eventually my patience wears thin and I snap at my child.

- My child often doesn’t listen to me or respect the limits I set.

- My children know exactly how to push my buttons.

- In our family, we often end up in conflict over something that started as a minor issue.

- I frequently become emotional (tearful, upset, angry, or cold) during conflicts with my children.

- Sometimes our home feels overwhelmed by emotions.

- In our home, there is too little expression of emotion.

- My child is always angry and arguing with me, or I am often angry and end up arguing a lot.

- I often feel unsupported because my partner takes a very different approach to handling difficult situations with the children.

- We are under a lot of pressure from work and life demands, and we have limited capacity to handle the children’s “messing around.”

What is Emotion-Focused Skills Training for Parents and Carers

Emotion-Focused Skills Training is designed to assist parents and caregivers in recognizing, understanding, accepting, regulating, and expressing emotions both in themselves and their children during daily interactions and challenging situations. The training seeks to provide parents with the knowledge and tools needed to handle emotional situations with their children calmly, confidently, empathetically, and supportively.

The Emotion-Focused Skills Training for Parents and Carers operates on the belief that parents and caregivers inherently desire to connect with their children and provide the best for them. By tapping into this motivation and learning new skills, they can effectively strengthen the caregiver-child relationship and support their child, whether young, adolescent, or adult, through various challenges. This approach also helps in preventing future mental health issues.

In this series of workshops, you will learn about:

· Understanding what emotions are and the needs associated with them.

· Learning how to de-escalate situations by applying empathic validation of emotions instead of reacting with anger, dismissiveness, or attempts to fix things.

· Understanding what a “feeling trap” is and how to overcome it.

· Recognizing the importance of establishing clear yet flexible boundaries and learning the process of effective limit-setting.

· Taking radical responsibility for our actions and understanding the impact of a genuine apology on our relationship with our children.

· Helping our children become more open and better at communicating their needs and emotions.
